A collective of the coolest websites in the world

The Cool Club x FWA | Visit Site

The Cool Club collaborated with FWA and Taschen to make a deck of cards displaying the 54 coolest websites in history. The cards are released alongside the book ‘Web Design, The Evolution of the Digital Era 1990-today’ by Rob Ford (FWA) and Julius Wiedemann (Taschen).

FWA was established in May 2000 as Favourite Website Awards, in England, UK. FWA is where you go to experience cutting-edge innovation in digital design and development. It’s a space that encourages the digital industry to push the boundaries of technology, to show people what is possible.

To coincide with the launch of the cards and the book, we made an interactive gallery website to display the cards. We built the website using three.js to bring the cards to life in animated 3D. Each card interacts with the user by elevating up to tell the story of the influential website behind each card, there is also a link to allow the user to join an online discussion. The cards are looped endlessly to immerse the user in The Cool Club x FWA universe.

The end result is a fully interactive online deck of cards that showcases the illustrations and stories behind each card. The cards are limited edition with just 1000 packs produced, grab yours over at thecoolclub.co now.

About the book: Web Design. The Evolution of the Digital World 1990-today is a sweeping reference work of the websites that paved the pixelized way. Since its debut in 1990, the internet has seen over a billion web pages—but it wasn’t always sleek interfaces. In this visual tour through history, trace the very earliest examples of what we today take for granted, from the first website to use surround sound to the first ‘upload-your-face’ function and YouTube-like page. Complete with year-by-year factsheets, Google insights, and commentary from the creators themselves.
